Social Security Number with F1 Visa?
As an international student attending school in the United States on an F1 Visa, you are eligible to work in the US. However, that does not mean you’ll be eligible for a Social Security Number (SSN) and you may be required to obtain an ITIN instead. Social Security Numbers are assigned to people who are authorized to work in the United States but only if they have an employment offer. If you’re in the US on an F1 Visa and you have a job, then you’ll likely need to obtain a SSN. Otherwise, you’ll be required to get an ITIN to report any scholarships, grants, or other financial aid you receive while a student.
