What is an ITIN?
An ITIN, or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, is a nine-digit number issued to an individual by the IRS that is used to report income. This number is used by individuals who are not eligible to receive a Social Security Number (SSN). Most individuals who obtain ITINs are foreign nationals including non-resident aliens, US resident aliens, international students and faculty, or children and spouses of US citizens / resident aliens / US visa holders.
The only purpose of an ITIN is to report federal income taxes. These numbers are not valid for work purposes and they may not be used as identification documents outside of the US tax system. Once a person becomes eligible for a SSN, the should stop using their ITIN and apply for a SSN here.
